You ( ) know that the festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3020 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington，D.C. He wished for a lasting friendship between the United States and Japan. On March 27，1912，First Lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Japanese ambassador planted the first two cherry trees from Japan on the north bank of the Potomac River West Potomac Park. A few of the original 3020 trees donated to the U.S. remain. Others □made from cuttings taken from the original trees.
