As Charles D. Daly’s 1921 book American Football baldly asserts, “Football is a war game.” Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest coaches, was an admirer of General George Patton, and recent war films such as We Were Soldiers (2002) and Jarhead (2005) still make the comparison, The Replacements (2000) picks up some of the war metaphors, but takes its main cue from the 1987 National Football League players’ strike. The film suggests the inherent threats to competition posed by success. Here the players, not the owners, are the enemies of the game. They are described as a bunch of “bitchy millionaires” living in “castles.” Retired coach Jim McGuinty is called up put together a team of “poor nobodies who will play to win.” Whether war or sport or American capitalism, this is a vision of people pushed to the edge, paid little, all for a shot at fame.
